Interplay between structure, chemistry and physical properties in the
iron superconductors and related materials
Alaska Subedi

The iron superconductors and related materials exhibit diverse
phenomena. I will discuss the use of first principles calculations to
sort out the interplay between the structure and chemistry of these
materials and their physical properties. I will examine the electronic
structure of the iron superconductors and its relevance to the
magnetism and unconventional superconductivity observed in these
compounds. I will then study how the macroscopic properties change
when Ni and Ge are substituted in the place of Fe and pnictides,
respectively, by considering the illustrative cases of BaNi$_2$As$_2$
and YFe$_2$Ge$_2$. I will provide microscopic bases for the
conventional electron-phonon superconductivity in BaNi$_2$As$_2$ and
unconventional spin fluctuation mediated superconductivity in
YFe$_2$Ge$_2$.
The last part of the talk will be devoted to a presentation of my
recent work and ongoing research on the theory of nonlinear phononics
for coherent light-control of solids.
