External control of electronic phases in correlated-electron materials is a long-standing challenge of condensed-matter research.

In this talk, I will show how the combination of pressure tuning and x-ray spectroscopy has been used in the course of the last decade to gain fresh insights on the physics of conventional and unconventional superconductors.

I will in particular report on recent studies of the lattice dynamics by means of inelastic x-ray scattering in various families of superconductors exhibiting charge-density-waves, from a-U to dichalcogenides and cuprates.
