Quantum transport phenomena of Dirac electrons in bismuth

Bismuth has been studied for a long time since the beginning of the
solid state physics. It exhibits various fascinating phenomena. The
diamagnetism, the Nernst effect, the Shubnikov-de Haas, and the de
Haas-van Alphen effect, --- all these were discovered in bismuth. These
discoveries are not accidental, but are the necessary consequence due
to the specific band structure of bismuth --- the Dirac electrons.
We have theoretically investigated the Dirac electrons in bismuth,
especially on the quantum transport phenomena. We have discovered a
new contribution to the Hall conductivity due to the “interband
effect” of magnetic field. It was also found that the circularly
polarized light generates the optical conductivity whose spins are
completely polarized.
I will talk our recent results of Hall conductivity and the optical
conductivity of Dirac electrons in bismuth.
