Graphene as the classical playground of quantum excitations

Pouyan Ghaemi
University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign

Elastic deformations of underlying honey-comb lattice of Graphene affects the low energy Dirac states as a time reversal symmetric pseudo-magnetic field. In this talk I discuss the effect of interactions in this time reversal symmetric flat band system. I show that with electron-electron interactions, different phases with exotic topological orders can be realized. At the end I also show that another tunable system, molecular graphene, engineered by deposition of CO molecules on the metallic surface can also host topological insulating phases.
