First-Order Reversal Curves and the Magneto-Structural Phase Transition in FeTe

The first-order reversal curve (FORC) method, often used in studies of
ferromagnetic materials, can be applied to other hysteretic transitions
as well. I will describe the technique, which involves driving the sample
part of the way through the transition region and then returning to the
original phase, and its applications to magneto-structural transitions
in FeTe. Advantages include distinguishing slightly split transitions,
learning about the energetics of the mixed phase that exists within
the transition regime, and demonstrating the relative importance of
structural and magnetic interactions. For comparison, I will also present
an analogous measurement, with a strikingly different interpretation,
on the magneto-structural transition of an iron pnictide material.
