ARPES and Fe-based superconductivity

The amplitude and the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter are closely related to the electronic pairing mechanism in unconventional superconductors. Intrinsic complications in characterizing the superconducting order parameter arise when dealing with multi-band systems such as the Fe-based superconductors. Due to its ability to resolve the electronic structure directly in the momentum space, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is a powerful tool for studying multi-band systems. In addition to the superconducting gap, ARPES gives access to a wide energy range allowing us to investigate the role played by the electronic correlations. Here I present ARPES results of Fe-based superconductors and contrast physical phenomena where local physics play a dominant role with situations better understood in terms of itinerant electrons. In particular, I show that Fe-based superconductivity is driven by short-range interactions.

Biography :
Pierre Richard graduated from Université de Sherbrooke (Canada) and learned ARPES while doing a 3-year postdoc at Boston College. He then worked 2 years as Assistant Professor at Tohoku University (Japan), where he published the first ARPES paper on Fe-based superconductors. In 2010, Pierre Richard has been appointed by the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he still works as a Professor. He has published more than 115 papers cited over 4000 times.
